What is Tencel™ Lyocell?

Everything You Need to Know About Tencel™ Lyocell: The Eco-Friendly Fabric

As sustainability becomes a growing focus in the textile industry, more makers and designers are looking for fabrics that are both high-quality and eco-friendly. One standout material is Tencel™ Lyocell, a fabric known for its softness, durability, and minimal environmental impact. But what exactly is Tencel Lyocell, and why is it considered a sustainable choice? Let’s dive into how it’s made and why it’s a game-changer in the world of fabrics.

What Is Tencel™ Lyocell?

Tencel™ Lyocell is a semi-synthetic fiber derived from sustainably sourced wood pulp, primarily from eucalyptus, beech, and spruce trees. It is produced by Lenzing AG, an Austrian company known for its commitment to eco-friendly textile innovations.

Unlike conventional rayon or viscose, which rely on harsh chemicals and wasteful production methods, Tencel Lyocell is created through a closed-loop process, meaning that over 99% of the solvents and water used are recycled and reused.

How Is Tencel™ Lyocell Made?

The production of Tencel Lyocell is fascinating because it’s both efficient and sustainable. Here’s a simplified breakdown:

1. Sourcing Sustainable Wood

The process starts with responsibly harvested trees from certified sustainable forests. These trees require less water and land compared to cotton, making them a more sustainable resource.

2. Pulp Production

The wood is chipped into small pieces and processed into a wood pulp slurry. This step removes impurities while keeping the process environmentally friendly.

3. Eco-Friendly Solvent Spinning

The wood pulp is dissolved using a non-toxic, organic solvent called N-Methylmorpholine N-oxide (NMMO). Unlike traditional rayon or viscose production, which releases harmful chemicals, Tencel Lyocell uses a closed-loop system that recycles and reuses nearly all of the solvents and water.

4. Fiber Formation & Drying

The liquid solution is then spun into fibers through small nozzles. These fibers are washed, dried, and combed before being transformed into yarns and fabrics.

5. Final Fabric Production

The resulting fibers are woven or knitted into luxuriously soft and breathable fabrics, ready to be dyed and used in a variety of applications!
